Thinking about renovating your kitchen? What are the options you’re considering for your backsplash? Tiles are one of the popular choices today and one out of the ordinary material you can use is the tin.
The tin backsplash is the one to use if you wish to achieve a dramatic and classic effect in your kitchen. This material is most ideal in areas of the kitchen that produce high temperature. There’s a wide range of tin tiles available in the market these days and the textured ones are more preferred than the plain types.
Several advantages have been seen for the tin backsplash. While you may think that they’re not easy to clean, they actually are with the use of soap and water. In addition to the little maintenance required for this material, they’re also water resistant and can be installed on your kitchen wall with less effort.
Unlike when installing tiles that entails the application of grout in between the tile spaces which can be quite tiring especially if a large space is involved, mounting the tin tiles on the wall above your countertops will only require the use of a strong construction adhesive or glue. You don’t even need to add a new board before installing the tin backsplash because you can stick them directly to the existing wall.
In terms of design, there are many patterns, colors and finish to choose from. Some of the hues include white, copper, silver, green, burgundy, brass and mocha. Tin tiles can be installed in their natural color which is silver but then again, you can pick another color that will blend well with your kitchen’s overall design theme.
Should you decide to change the color of your tin backsplash later on, you can always paint them. Before you start painting the tin tiles, though, make sure to apply an oil based primer first to enable the paint to adhere to the material. Also, you need to use metallic oil based paint for this purpose.
The standard size of tin tiles is 6 inches by 6 inches and they’re perfect for the average kitchen backsplash with a height of 18 inches. This means no cutting of the tiles will be required and therefore, easy installation for you.
Always make sure to have your materials ready before you start your project. This can take only a few hours and can even be a DIY weekend project. An important thing to remember is to use gloves if you’ll be doing the installation. The tile edges can be sharp and cause cuts on your skin if you don’t handle them right. For the exposed parts, you may want to choose the uncut and factory edges as they’re not that sharp.
To start the installation, do apply a generous amount of adhesive on the back part of the tiles. Next, carefully position the tile on the wall depending on where you want to start. When installing the succeeding tiles, make sure to slide the edge of the next tiles behind the previously mounted ones so you achieve a seamless and attractive kitchen backsplash.
